POSITION TITLE: NURSING SERVICES MANAGER (NSM)

1. POSITION FUNCTION/ JOB SCOPE

As an EXCO position, the NSM has overall responsibility to provide excellent clinical and professional leadership to nursing and patient care staff at all levels within the hospital environment including in-patient and outpatient services and above all, ensuring that delivery of nursing care is of the highest standards and as expected at a premium hospital.

 

2. MAIN DUTIES

Detailed and specific duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to:

2.1 Strategic Leadership

 

The NSM will largely be responsible for strategic leadership over the Nursing Services Department by:
  • Developing, overseeing and helping to implement Nursing programs and projects that support the Hospital’s vision and short- and long-term plans.
  • Directing and overseeing delivery of the Nursing Services Strategic Pillars in the overall Hospital’s strategic Plan

2.2 Operational Management

 

The NSM will provide oversight on the general Nursing and Patient Care operations function within the Hospital by:
  • Ensuring compliance with the facility’s and all Health l regulations s in the country.
  • Working closely with the Medical Director and Hospital Services Manager to ensure that staff work effectively and efficiently to achieve the Hospital’s objectives,
  • Leading on the Nursing Score Card by ensuring that the hospital meets all the key criteria and correct standards through developing, interpreting and enforcing adherence and measuring health outcomes against standards.
  • Leading on all aspects of patients’ safety and experience by enforcing the Standard Operating procedures which include medication administration, storage procedures and controlled regulations.
  • Leading in designing, reviewing, interpreting and enforcing implementing of the Mwaiwathu Private Hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) policies and procedures
  •  Ensuring that there are effective safeguarding procedures in place across the Hospital.

2.3 Performance Management –Nursing

 

The NSM will be responsible for successful compliance at departmental level of the Balanced Score Card System within the Nursing Department by:
  • Overseeing Hospital’s performance reviews, communicating results to top management, and developing strategies based on organizational reviews.

 

2.4 Strategic Reporting

The NSM will have overall responsibility over strategic reporting in the department by:
  • Working in collaboration with the Medical Director and the Hospital Services Manager in monitoring and delivering key quality improvements
  • Producing reports on Nursing Services to the Clinical Subcommittee quarterly
  • Producing monthly patient statistics to EXCO.
  • Holding regular staff meetings to share knowledge, give direction and discuss areas for improvement.

2.4 Planning, Coordinating and Control

 

The NSM will also have overall responsibility over planning, coordination of activities and control in the Nursing Department by:
  • Working in liaison with the Human Resources Manager (HRM) in maintaining a motivated staff through recruitment, selection, orientation and training. Budgetary formulation, analysis of variances and control
  • Maintaining supplies and equipment inventories by reviewing usage reports, identifying trends and approving requisitions.
  • Coordinating all strategic and key activities within the department including designing and effective implementation of the Work plan.
  • Working in collaboration with the Medical Director and the Hospital Services Manager, NSM will be involved in the planning and implementation of developments relating to patient care and quality throughout the Hospital.

2.6 People Management

 

Overall responsibility in providing human resources and administrative support and managing strategies in the areas of: human resources (Nursing) and general administration by:
  • Providing all Line management support to all Nursing Staff to promote a productive and supportive work environment.
  • Overseeing the performance Management system which will include coaching, counseling and disciplining all the Nursing staff
  • Ensuring continuous professional development for the Department’s staff.

 

3. Qualifications and Experience

 

  •  A Master’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery or equivalent obtained from a recognized University.
  • Over ten years of relevant experience at senior level

  • Clean Audit reviews by the MPH quality assurance team and the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi and other Regulatory bodies
  •  Overall budget performance within 5%
  • Reduced exposure to litigation
